What Factors Affect the Cost of Installing Shutters?

Tier-On-Tier Shutters Cost

We absolutely love shutters. They add so much beauty and value to your home; they are a premium upgrade that is a long-lasting investment. However, the word ‘premium’ can be off-putting – something so durable and high quality MUST be extortionate, right? Not necessarily.

If you have ever found yourself asking, ‘How much do shutters cost?’ You know that the answer isn’t straightforward, as there are lots of factors to consider. So, that’s why we’ve made this handy guide to explain everything you need to know about the cost of installing shutters.

1. Window Size & Shape

Window size and shape will vary the cost of installing shutters for a couple of very obvious reasons. Larger windows require more material and craftsmanship, and if you’ve also got arched, circular, bay or angled windows, they will require bespoke manufacturing.

At The Scottish Shutter Company, we specialise in custom solutions for even the trickiest and most unusual of windows – we love a challenge, so even if you think your window covering issue CAN’T be solved, we’ll be happy to take a look! [link to last month’s blog about shaped windows]

2. Shutter Material Choice

There is a wide range of materials to choose from, such as hardwood, faux wood, hybrid, and waterproof PVC, each with varying costs.

figiHardwood

This premium material is made from 100% solid wood and is considered the most versatile choice, even for those more difficult windows. Hardwood is regarded as the longest-lasting shutter material and can add significant value to your property. Its quality is clear from first glance. Hardwood tends to be the most expensive choice, but given its longevity, you may find it offers better value over time.

Faux Wood

Often made from a composite material like MDF, faux wood is considerably cheaper than hardwood, whilst mimicking the look of solid wood well. It’s an excellent choice for people who want the solid-wood aesthetic but are on a tighter budget.

Waterproof PVC

PVC shutters are typically less expensive than real hardwood but generally cost more than basic faux wood options. PVC is exceptionally strong and completely waterproof, making it easier to keep clean and far less susceptible to moisture damage, such as warping. This shutter style is your best choice for bathrooms and kitchens.

Speaking to a shutter specialist will help you understand which materials suit your home best and how this affects the overall cost of installing shutters in your home.

3. Style & Configuration

Once you’ve picked your perfect material, the next step is the style and configuration, each of which will affect the cost of installing shutters.

The most popular choices are between full height, tier-on-tier and café style.

  • Full-height – Shutters that cover the entire window are a popular, energy-efficient style – they help reduce heat loss through your windows, adding value without trying! This style can be as simple or complex as you want, with additional tilt rod options and extra security additions such as bolted locks and motorisation.
  • Tier-on-tier – These have separate panels for the top and bottom sections, offering greater flexibility but costing more due to additional hardware and complexity.
  • Café-style – These will only cover the lower half of your window, so they use less material and generally cost less.

The rule of thumb is that the more complex your design, the more it will impact the cost of installing shutters.

4. Customisation & Finish Options

There are many finishes to choose from, including stains and paints. You can colour-match to suit your existing decor, and there is usually a range of hardware options, too.

The louvre (the little slats that make up the shutter) size can affect the cost of installing shutters. Typical widths range from 64mm to 89mm, and these impact the shutter’s light control, privacy and overall look. It’s best to speak with one of our advisors when deciding which louvre size will be best for your shutters.

Remember that a made-to-measure shutter cost will be higher if you opt for more customisation; however, it’s well worth taking your time making these choices. Shutters tend to be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, and ensuring they are exactly what you want means you will enjoy them for years to come.

5. Location & Travel Factors

Choosing who to get your shutters from is an essential factor when considering the cost of installing shutters. Certain areas require longer travel times for surveys, delivery and installation, and this will impact shutter prices. Scotland is notorious for difficult-to-reach, remote delivery addresses, so you must ask your supplier for all these costs during your consultation.

Did you know that The Scottish Shutter Company covers all of Scotland, including remote and rural regions? However, if you live in less accessible areas, we may need to charge additional fees due to longer travel times and access restrictions. It’s best to ask early on to ensure these costs are factored into your budget.

As a company, we strive to provide exceptional value and the very best service nationwide. As such, we will always be upfront and honest with our customers about location factors that influence the cost of installing shutters.

6. Property Conditions & Installation Complexity

Where you live is an important factor, but so too is your actual home.

Older properties may require adjustments for uneven frames, deep window recesses and high windows, limited access or unusual room layouts, which may increase labour time and the overall made-to-measure shutter cost.

We’ve not encountered a property yet that we couldn’t handle – and our skilled team have installed shutters in all kinds of quirky, unusual spaces.

7. Why Professional Installation Matters

Installing shutters is not easy; it’s a skill we have honed for over 35 years as a proud member of the BBSA and winners of many awards for our service. It is vital that whoever you decide to design and install your shutters is up to the task.

Precise fitting improves insulation by avoiding gaps and reducing drafts. Seeking expert guidance will enhance durability and ensure long-term operation. Done correctly, your shutters are guaranteed to last longer; done incorrectly, you could encounter unknown problems and extra costs further down the road.

8. Quality vs Price: The Long-Term Value of Premium Shutters

While we understand money is a significant factor when shopping for shutters, quality materials will last longer. Cheaper shutters are more prone to warping, fading or failing within a few years, which could cost you more in the long run.

Getting it right with your shutters will enhance your home’s kerb appeal and make it more energy-efficient.

The cost of installing shutters can vary greatly, and if you choose the right company to help you stick to a realistic budget, you will get high-quality shutters that last for decades.
