Phantom Retractable Screens

Award-winning insect screens, professionally installed

Not a plastic clip-on from a hardware shop. Phantom screens are precision-engineered, hand-finished retractable screens built from extruded aluminium and designed to disappear completely when not in use. Measured and fitted by The Scottish Shutter Company.

Why Phantom Screens

The difference between a screen and a Phantom screen

Most fly screens are designed to be cheap. Phantom screens are designed to be invisible. Every screen is bespoke, made to your exact measurements from corrosion-resistant extruded aluminium (6063-T5 alloy) with a chip and fade resistant powder coat finish in any RAL colour. The mesh is cut by hand, and Phantom's highly trained craftspeople ensure that each screen is finished to their customers' exacting requirements. Nothing leaves their workshop until every aspect is perfect.

When retracted, a Phantom screen disappears entirely into its housing. There is no permanent mesh obscuring your view, no plastic frame cluttering your window, and no compromise on the appearance of your home. When you need protection, the screen deploys smoothly and locks into place. When you do not, it vanishes.

Phantom Screens are the winners of Best Property Screen Manufacturer 2024 and Best High-End Door and Window Screen Company 2024. They hold a five-star Google rating and have built a reputation for quality that sits in a different category entirely from the stick-on screens and magnetic nets available elsewhere.

Our Range

Two products, chosen for a reason

Phantom manufacture a wider range of screens, but we have deliberately selected just two: the models that deliver the best results for Scottish homes, installed to the standard our customers expect. We do not carry products we cannot stand behind completely.

The Phantom Serene in operation, fitted by our installation team

Manual Window Screen

Phantom Serene

A pull-down retractable screen for windows up to 1830mm wide by 1980mm high. The Serene uses a low-profile aluminium housing that can be colour matched to your window frames, making it virtually invisible when retracted.

The optional soft-close mechanism means the screen glides up smoothly and gently every time, with no slamming or jarring. We include soft close as standard on all Serene screens up to 1525mm wide. The screen is child-safe with no cords or strings. Simply use the integrated handle to pull down, and flick to release.

White is standard. Any RAL colour is available at additional cost, plus three wood grain finishes (Oak, Medium Oak, and Rosewood). The Serene is designed to complement your home rather than compromise it.

Mesh options

18-14 Standard Mesh

Optimum ventilation with protection against flies, wasps, moths, and other common airborne insects.

20-20 Midge Mesh

Finer weave with approximately 400 openings per square inch. Holes of 0.6 to 0.8mm stop the Scottish midge (wingspan 1.4mm).

  • Maximum size: 1830mm wide x 1980mm high
  • Soft-close included as standard up to 1525mm wide
  • Child-safe design with no cords or strings
  • Any RAL colour plus Oak, Medium Oak, and Rosewood wood grain
  • Limited lifetime warranty on framework and mechanical parts

Installation notes for the Serene

The Serene can be fitted internally or externally depending on how your windows open. Here is how it works:

  • Ground floor, inward opening windows: Screen fitted to the outside of the window
  • Ground floor, outward opening windows: Screen fitted to the inside
  • First floor and above: Outward opening windows only, fitted inside

We are unable to fit Serene screens to inward opening windows above ground floor level, as this would require external access at height for a relatively compact product. We prefer to be straightforward about this rather than quote for work that does not make practical sense.

Serene pricing guide

From £910

per window, including VAT, measure and installation

The Serene is competitively priced regardless of window size. A standard window costs from around £910 inc VAT, and even the largest size (1830 x 1980mm) is around £948 inc VAT. Minimum order £2,400 inc VAT.

Motorised Power Screen

Phantom Executive

The Executive is Phantom's flagship product: a fully motorised retractable screen designed for the large glass openings that define modern architecture. Bi-fold doors, sliding glass walls, covered terraces, and verandas up to 12 metres wide in a single span.

Built from the same corrosion-resistant extruded aluminium as the Serene, the Executive adds Somfy tubular motors for effortless operation by remote control, wall switch, smartphone app, or voice command through Alexa or Google Home. Wind and sun sensors can automate the screen entirely, deploying when conditions are right and retracting when the wind picks up.

The patented Mesh Lock zipper technology in the side tracks prevents the mesh from blowing out in the wind, a common failure point in cheaper screen systems. A weighted slidebar at the base ensures smooth, even deployment across the full width of the opening.

  • Up to 12m wide x 4.8m high in a single span
  • Somfy motorised with remote, app, and voice control
  • Mesh Lock zipper technology prevents blow-out
  • Smart home integration via Somfy TaHoma
  • Wind and sun sensors for automatic operation
  • Surface mount or fully recessed installation
  • Any RAL colour to match your frames
  • Five-year motor warranty, limited lifetime on framework

Made for Scotland

The midge mesh advantage

Standard insect mesh keeps out flies and wasps, but the Highland midge is smaller. With a wingspan of just 1.4mm, midges can pass through conventional mesh designed for larger insects. The 20-20 midge mesh available on both the Serene and Executive has approximately 400 openings per square inch, with each hole measuring just 0.6 to 0.8mm. That is fine enough to stop even the smallest midge.

The trade-off is approximately 40% less airflow compared to standard mesh. In practice, this is rarely an issue because most people choose midge mesh specifically for the evenings and conditions when midges are active, and air circulation through the finer mesh is still more than adequate for comfortable ventilation.

If you live in an area where midges are a problem from late spring through summer, the 20-20 mesh transforms your ability to enjoy open windows and doors during those months.
