Our Principles
Why we don't use contractors, subcontractors or commission‑based salespeople
If you have ever invited a home improvement company into your house, you may have wondered who you are actually dealing with.
Is the person giving you advice part of the company, or a salesperson working on commission?
Is the installer who eventually turns up the same person you met earlier, or a subcontractor who has never even seen the job before?
These are reasonable questions, because in much of the home improvement industry the answer is often unclear.
At The Scottish Shutter Company we do things rather differently. In fact, it is one of the most important principles behind how our business operates.
We do not use contractors.
We do not use subcontractors.
We do not employ self-employed salespeople or commission-based estimators.
We never have, and we never will.
That might sound like a bold statement, but there is a very simple reason behind it: when someone invites us into their home, they deserve to know exactly who they are dealing with.
A single team with shared responsibility
Every person you meet from The Scottish Shutter Company is part of our own team.
They are trained by us, work to our standards, and represent our company every single day.
When advice is given, it comes from someone who understands our products, our installation methods and our reputation. When something is measured, it is measured by someone who knows exactly how the product will eventually be installed. And when the installation takes place, it is carried out by experienced installers who are part of our own organisation.
This might sound obvious, but it is surprisingly rare in the home improvement world.
Many companies operate using a patchwork of independent contractors. The salesperson may be self-employed and paid purely on commission. The person measuring the windows might be someone different again. The installers are often subcontracted tradespeople who may work for several different companies.
That structure can work in some industries, but for something as precise as bespoke window shutters and blinds it introduces unnecessary risk.
Why subcontracting creates problems
Window shading systems are not off-the-shelf products. Every installation is made to measure and manufactured specifically for a particular window.
Once something has been made, it cannot simply be adjusted if the measurements were wrong or if the specification was not quite right.
For that reason the process from advice, to measurement, to installation needs to be seamless. Everyone involved must understand the details of the project and take responsibility for the final outcome.
When different independent contractors are involved, that chain of responsibility can easily become fragmented.
The salesperson may promise something that turns out not to be technically possible. The measuring technician may not have been present during the original conversation. The installer may arrive with very little background information about the job.
None of those situations are ideal for the homeowner. By keeping everything within our own team, we remove that uncertainty.
Advice without pressure
Another reason we avoid commission-based salespeople is that commission changes behaviour.
When someone's income depends on closing a sale, there is always the risk that the advice you receive becomes influenced by that incentive.
Our approach is very different.
We do not employ salespeople at all. Instead, the people you speak to are shading specialists whose role is to give clear, honest guidance about what will work best for your windows.
Sometimes the right answer may be shutters. Sometimes it might be blinds. Occasionally it may even be that shutters are not the best solution for a particular window.
Because nobody in our company is paid commission, there is no pressure to push one option over another. Our job is simply to help you make the right decision for your home.
Installation done properly
Installation is where all of the earlier work comes together.
A beautifully manufactured shutter or blind can only perform properly if it has been fitted accurately and carefully. Even a few millimetres can make the difference between something that looks effortless and something that feels awkward.
That is why our installations are carried out by our own trained team.
They understand the products we supply, the tolerances involved, and the little details that make the finished result look exactly as it should.
Because they work with us every day, they also take personal pride in the reputation of the company. When someone wears The Scottish Shutter Company uniform, they are representing a business that has been serving homeowners across Scotland for decades. That matters to us, and it matters to them.
A slower, more deliberate approach
Running a business this way is not always the fastest route to growth.
Using contractors can sometimes allow companies to expand quickly or operate in more locations with fewer staff. Commission-based sales teams can increase short-term sales numbers.
But our goal has never been to become the biggest company in the industry.
Our goal has always been to provide the best possible experience for the people who choose to work with us. That means taking a slightly slower, more deliberate approach. It means building a strong team, training people properly and maintaining standards that we can stand behind.
The difference you notice
For most homeowners, the difference becomes clear very quickly.
The advice tends to feel calmer and more thoughtful. The measuring process is careful and precise. The installation feels organised and professional.
And perhaps most importantly, you always know exactly who you are dealing with.
There are no anonymous subcontractors, no commission-driven salespeople and no confusion about responsibility.
Just one team, working together, with the same goal: to ensure that the finished result in your home is something you will be pleased with for many years to come.
